“Eyai Akuj:” God is There

Dear Shining Hope Family,

In Karamoja, Uganda, Eyai Akuj is a common phrase Christians use to encourage and comfort others. May YOU be encouraged reading of our Lord’s presence in our ministry this August!

I. God was there in our children’s education.

Our kids finished their second term of school on August 18th!

Throughout the term, Kalungi occasionally visited the school to check on them. He always spotted them sitting attentively within the first four rows of class, focused on their studies. Their grades reflect their hard work. We are so proud of them!

English is still very difficult for them. During their third and final term (starting September 18th!), Kalungi plans to hire an English tutor. Because Uganda has hundreds of tribal languages, speaking and writing English fluently is vital for getting a good job in their futures.

Enjoy these pictures from the beginning of their second term!

II. God was there in the lives of hurting neighbor kids.

“This baby is called Babirye,” Kalungi writes. “She’s a twin to a boy. Here, she had come to me looking for company as the rest of the neighbor children were playing, and she felt alone. It was her first time feeling comfortable coming to me.”

“Here, this little boy was putting himself in a position for me to tickle him. Whenever I would stop, he would continue showing me that he’s still enjoying the tickles. He was laughing out loud enjoying it.”

III. God was there in Nakato’s life.

Since we last updated you, Nakato has been continuing treatment for her eardrums and regularly going for checkups. This August, the doctor prescribed eight weeks of further treatment.

Kalungi texted me: “Nakato is responding very well to the medication, and she has high chances of having her ears healed without any operation. Only that she must continue with another treatment for two months. Her fundraiser should be reactivated and I’m just praying and hoping this will be the last time for this need, as I believe after it, she may need just a little maintenance care.”

Thanks to our Shining Hope family, the Lord has already provided over seven weeks of care for her!

Here, Nakato is doing the job she enjoys so much—taking care of all the kiddos!

I apologize that this update is a bit delayed in coming to you. Recently, one of my loved ones was diagnosed with cancer. During this difficult time, one truth comforts me: “God is our refuge and strength, a very PRESENT help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” (Psalm 46:1-2)

God HAS been with us in our ministry.

He IS with us.

And He WILL continue to be with us.

Thank you so very much for your outpouring of love and generosity, one of the many reasons we—and the ones we serve—are reminded of the nearness of our God! And if you find yourself struggling today, we want to encourage you that no matter what you’re going through: God is there. Eyai Akuj!

To the One Who will never leave,

Kalungi + Rachel

PS: Praise and worship are one of the most exciting moments for the children’s Sunday morning! We’re happy that these children are learning more about God in these sessions. You can witness a glimpse of their praise time in this 24-second video!
